The Citizen Digest for Wednesday, August 1

Carleton Willard Village celebrates its 30th anniversary this week, with a sea cruise for its residents and staff.

This week’s Community Digest, a weekly compendium of announcements by organizations in Bedford, highlights several upcoming events:

  • Bedford’s final Concert on the Common, featuring the John Penney Band will take place on Thursday, August 2, at 7 pm. There will be country music from Gene Autry to Garth Brooks!  Contemporary and traditional country music, 50’s & 60’s, oldies and pop standards. All concerts held on the Bedford Town Common. Rain cancellations or postponements will be posted on the Recreation Department’s website, www.bedfordrecreation.org.
  • Bedford Day applications are due on August 10. Thanks to the Bedford Chamber of Commerce for the reminder, and to the Recreation Department where you can download an application for your favorite organization’s Bedford Day booth: Click here!
  • Carleton Willard Village turns 30 years old on August 2. To celebrate, residents are ‘cruising’ through August 3. They’re at an “offshore casino” in the Carleton Willard auditorium today; Thursday’s adventure will be an elegant dinner in Paris; and a wine-tasting in Florence is planned for Friday. Click to view some images of the fun, and watch for more news about Carleton Willard in The Citizen within the next few days!
  • There is a sign for an intriguing event on Saturday morning: A Bicycle Recycle event at St. Michael’s church. Bring a bike you no longer use and it will find a new life with someone else, or perhaps in another country.
  • Lee Vorderer sends word that there will be a celebration to welcome two new families into Bedford and its Habitat Partnership when their new homes are dedicated at 4 pm on Thursday, August 2. Bedford’s Habitat property at 130 North Road now has its own road, Carter Way, connecting all the homes. Lee reminds us that Bedford’s eight-home Habitat project has been a long (5 years) and very worthwhile journey. The eighth home on Carter Way is still under construction; if you would like to volunteer for a work day, contact Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell at 978-692-0927 or register online at www.lowellhabitat.org.
  • Although this final event doesn’t have anything to do with Bedford that we know of, it just plain sounds like fun: Open Air Circus,  a non-profit community-based group that teaches circus and performing skills for an hour each afternoon from the end of June through the end of July. The students then rehearse for a week and present four two-hour circus performances under a big top at Nunziato Field in Union Square, Somerville, this weekend. There’s a suggested donation of $3 per person; performances will be held on Friday, August 3 at 7pm; Saturday, August 4 at 2pm and 7 pm; and Sunday, August 5 at 2pm.
