This week’s Community Digest, a weekly compendium of announcements by organizations in Bedford, highlights several upcoming events and looks forward to Bedford Day.

Bedford’s Concerts on the Common returns on August 16

Because the July 26 Concert on the Common was rained out, there will be a makeup concert on August 16.  The concert featuring the Mike Tarara Band will begin at 6:30 rather than 7 pm because sunset comes much earlier than in July.

Candidates’ Night for the 3rd Middlesex Senatorial District on August 15

The seven primary candidates for the 3rd Middlesex District State Senate seat have accepted an invitation to the League of Women of Voters Candidates’ Night on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at 7:30 p.m., at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center, 1276 Main Street, West Concord. The forum is free and open to the public.

Republican candidates Gregory P. Howes and Sandi Martinez will sit on the first panel of the evening. Democrats Michael J. Barrett, Alexander E. Buck, Mara Marie Dolan, Joe Kearns Goodwin and Joseph W. Mullin will make up the second panel. Voters will choose each party’s nominee in the State Primary Election on September 6; the deadline to register to vote is Friday, August 17.

The forum is sponsored by the LWV of Concord-Carlisle, with the support of the LWVs of Lexington and Sudbury and assistance from the Bedford, Chelmsford, Waltham and Weston Leagues. For additional information, contact 978-254-1598 or [email protected].

Political campaign events in Bedford

We’ve missed telling you about campaign events that have already happened in Bedford, but we’re looking forward to doing better. When local campaign event announcements arrive, we post them the individual candidate pages, and between now and the primary on September 6 we’ll list the Bedford events in Wednesday’s Citizen Update, as long as the announcements are in our hands by Tuesday noon for the following week.

  • David Fionda, candidate for State Representative in the 21st Middlesex District, is scheduled to meet voters at Café Darling from 8 to 9 am on Saturday morning, August 11.

Free Friday Fun at local museums

Thanks to the generosity of the Highland Street Foundation, Both the Children’s Discovery Museum and the Science Discovery Museum in Acton will be open for Free Friday Fun on Friday, August 10.

The Concord Museum will be admission-free from 9 am until 8 pm on Friday, August 17. Exhibits include Annie Leibovitz’s Pilgrimage show and there will be a Revolutionary War encampment on the lawn from 10 am to 3 pm that day, complete with re-enactors.

Family event: Old-Fashioned Toys and Games from 2 to 4 pm on Sunday, August 12

Bedford Arts & Crafts Society’s 13th Annual Regional Art Exhibition

The Bedford Arts & Crafts Society (BACS) will hold its 13th Annual Regional Art Exhibition at the Town Center on Bedford Day, September 15. This is our scholarship fund activity allowing BACS to give a scholarship to a deserving Bedford High School senior pursuing a degree in the arts. Categories for inclusion are painting/drawing, sculpture/3-dimensional art and photography. Any artist, professional or non-professional, beyond high school age, is encouraged to submit original creative work for consideration. All work is judged by a professional artist for prizes.

Submission date is Thursday September 13th, 9AM-12PM. Bring artwork framed for hanging to the Town Center, second floor.  The entry fee for BACS members is $10.00 for each piece and for non-members the fee is $12:00: 2 pieces of artwork are allowed per person.

The Exhibition will be open to the public on Friday, September 14, 2012, from 8AM-4PM,  and on Saturday September 15, 2012, Bedford Day, from 10:30 AM-3PM. Prizes will be awarded to selected recipients at noon on Bedford Day.

A new web interface and new classes at MCC

As prospective and returning students prepare for fall semester – which begins Wednesday, Sept. 5 – they will be greeted by a fresh, user-friendly new look for the college website.

Launched Monday, Aug. 6, and located at www.middlesex.mass.edu, MCC’s new site has been completely redesigned. The new site also allows visitors to connect with the college via Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. We invite visitors to explore the website and become better acquainted with MCC’s more than 75 degree and certificate programs, and hundreds of noncredit course offerings. Middlesex also offers online, evening and weekend options – including 15 programs that can be completed entirely online. Middlesex Community College – a great place to begin your future.

Middlesex Community College is offering four new courses this fall. Courses begin Sept. 5 and registration is now open.

  • Ceramics I
– Students will learn the basics of working with clay, including additive processes to create vessels and sculptures, as well as glazing, color and firing proceses. Students will make sculptural and functional forms to fire in an electric kiln and a Cambodian-style environmentally green smokeless wood-burning kiln.
  • History of Theater — This course familiarizes students with the major periods of world theatrical history and with the evolution of theater between periods, including Ancient Greek, Italian Renaissance, Elizabethan, French Classic and Modern.
  • STEM Research III
– This course is a continuation of STEM Research I & II, in which students engage in research projects under the guidance of individual faculty members. Students will work on experimental design, literature search, the scientific method, scientific inquiry, the fostering of teamwork and technical communication of STEM topics.
  • Wealth, Poverty & Capitalism: An Honors Seminar  — This course will compare economic systems with an emphasis on capitalism and how it has shaped the economic, social and political development of the U.S. and the world.
