Work is scheduled to begin shortly on Bedford’s oldest water main, located on Fletcher Road. The piping was commissioned in 1908 and carries water to the Pine Hill water tank. The main will be cleaned and relined with an interior coating of cement. It is expected that the project will be completed by fall, before cold weather sets in.
While the project is underway, temporary water lines will be visible above ground on both sides of the street to deliver water to Fletcher Road and Fitchdale Avenue residents. Letters from the Department of Public Works notifying residents of the project have been mailed to all abutters.
W. Walsh and Co., Inc. was the low bidder for the project at $237,131.44. The company is familiar to Bedford and has successfully performed similar work near Alaska Avenue. Funding will be provided under a Metropolitan Water Resources Authority grant program,as authorized by the 2012 Annual Town Meeting.
