The Bedford Department of Public Works and Conservation Commission are sponsoring a series of new roadside signs to identify and mark the major rivers and streams in Bedford.
This effort has been carried out by SuAsCo watershed associations (Sudbury, Assabet and Concord Rivers) in several towns, including Acton, Maynard, Stow and Westford. The new signs have been installed along Bedford roadways, near the Concord River and its tributaries Peppergrass Brook and Mill Brook, and at the Shawsheen River and tributaries Elm, Mongo, Springs, Hartwell, Vine and Beaver Brooks. The Concord River and its tributaries are within the SuAsCo watershed; all streams in Bedford are within the Merrimack River watershed. The goal is to help people to know the town’s surface waters, and foster interest and participation in their protection.
The original stream sign project was sponsored in 2004 in cooperation with the Organization for the Assabet River (OARS) and the Acton Stream Team. The sign design was created by the late Mary Michelman of Acton, founder of the Acton Stream Team, and Tom Tidman of the Acton Natural Resources Department; permission was generously granted to allow the Town of Bedford to use the design.

I’ve always gotten confused trying to keep track of what stream I’m crossing in Bedford; this should be great.
