The Bedford Blue Angels traveled to Newton for a late afternoon match-up this week.
Newton started strong, creating many chances but Bedford’s defense of Jackie S., Alina T., Brittany F., and Meghan K. played great team defense to bend but not break. Alina T. played particularly well against a good attacking player from Newton.
Smart goalkeeping and saves by Valerie S. shut down the Newton offense to keep them off the score board. As the half wore on Bedford began to impose there play. Some good midfield play by Natalie T. and Jenny G. turned into a promising attacking play by Felicia B. and Farrell O.. Bedford locked Newton in with a few corner kicks and long range shots from Julia S., but they were unable to ripple the net.
Into the second half Bedford continued to work the ball with some great inter play by Sena C. and Jennifer R.. At one point Bedford was under excessive pressure with Julia S. finally clearing the ball to Jennifer R. who released Farrell O. who made a great run down the left wing and shot just outside the post.
After this, Bedford began to turn the game to their favor. Jenny G. made a strong throw-in to Valerie S. who made a quick turn and shot that went wide right. Soon after, a strong clearance by Jackie S. and a slick layoff by Sena C. led to another strong chance scoring attempt by Valerie S.. Attacking runs by Brittany F. won numerous corner kicks as Bedford continued to apply pressure to the Newton defense.
Finally Bedford’s pressure produced a goal. Julia S. and Jenny G. force a turnover that Valerie S. collected and laid of the ball for a long range shot by Jennifer R. that beat the Newton goalkeeper.
Bedford locked their defense down protecting the lead for Meghan K. who made some timely saves and good distribution.
