At Monday night’s Selectmen’s meeting, current one-term member, Bill Moonan, made known his intention to run to retain his seat on the Town’s governing board. He will more formally announce his candidacy in time for the Town Caucus on January 8.
Moonan and his wife, Carol Amick, have lived in Bedford for close to 36 years. He served at length on a number of town boards before becoming a Selectman, including the Bedford Housing Authority and the Historic District Commission. He was instrumental in the early 1980’s effort to preserve the former Union School building, known now as the Town Center.
As Selectman, Moonan acts as liaison to a number of Town committees including the Cable TV Committee and Capital Expenditures. He is an advocate for better citizen access to elected officials and has urged the Town to establish and publish email addresses for the Selectmen to facilitate communication. Moonan also believes that consistently posting meeting dates, agendas, and minutes is important for civic understanding and engagement. He continues to work to overcome the obstacles that have kept Selectmen’s meetings from being aired on local access television.
Moonan is known to be fiscally conservative. His business background is that of Chief Financial Officer for a number of companies over the span of his career and he has an entrepreneurial resume that includes heading his own small company. He is now semi-retired.
To quote from his 2010 campaign literature, Moonan said, “[T]he demands on Bedford are predominately financial in this time of economic uncertainty. I want to ensure that Bedford’s character is protected as the Town seeks to meet the challenges and obligations of the future.”
