The Wilson Mill Park Committee is pleased to announce that the reconstructed and improved historic dam, spanning Vine Brook between Burlington Road and Old Burlington Road, is near completion after more than 10 years in the planning. Town Manager Rick Reed conveyed a request from the Committee to the Selectmen on Monday night to name the dam for former Selectman Gordon Feltman, who died suddenly in 2008 while still in office.
Feltman had been, according to a memo from the Wilson Mill Park Committee, “an integral part of the vision for the park; [a]s a neighbor knew the terrain and recognized the potential.” Feltman saw benefits for the whole town and for all age groups that renewal of the mill would bring.
Selectman liaison to the Wilson Mill Park Committee, Mike Rosenberg, spoke about Feltman’s vital role in Bedford as a town official.
“Gordon acted as a bridge between so many different constituencies, particularly communities that many times can get overlooked such as the military—he being retired military—and the emphasis he put on regional participation,” Rosenberg said. “It certainly seemed to me that the Committee’s idea [to honor Feltman] was appropriate.”
The Selectmen unanimously approved the Wilson Mill Park Committee’s request and noted that a public ceremony would take place in the spring, following completion of the landscaping around the mill site. A plaque, formally dedicating the bridge to Feltman, is planned.
