Six former outstanding student-athletes, an eminent sportswriter, a legendary coach and a sectional championship team have been elected to the fourth class of the Bedford High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

The inductees will be honored at special ceremonies Saturday evening, April 6, in the Parish Center of the Church of St. Michael beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets at $20 each are available through the BHS Athletic Department (781-275-1700)

The honorees are:

  • Air Force Major Chuck Axtell ’95, four-year varsity swimmer and lacrosse goalie. A Dual County League swimming all-star and Lowell Sun all-star goalie, Chuck went on to swim for four years at Norwich University. An experienced AWACS pilot, Chuck is stationed in Baghdad.
  • Joe Dooley ’71, DCL basketball all-star who also excelled in soccer, track and golf. Joe went on to star in basketball at Johnson State College and is a member of the Vermont school’s sports hall of fame. He is director of volunteer services at the VA Hospital in Bedford.
  • Carla (Inferrera) Monte ‘95, anchor of the varsity softball at BHS for four varsity years as an all-star catcher. Carla continued to excel un the sport at Post College, where she was an academic all-American. She also played varsity basketball in Bedford.
  • Kim (Ginder) Ratcliffe ’79, a highest-echelon competitor for four years in track and cross-country. She set school records in the mile and two-mile, winning the state Class B championship in the latter event in 1979. A DCL all-star in the fall and spring, Ratcliffe went on to compete in cross-country at Brown University.
  • Kip Sternberg ’76, Dual County League all-star in football and baseball who went on to a stellar gridiron career at Northeastern University. Sternberg also was an anchor of Bedford’s American Legion baseball team in the mid-1970s.
  • Carol Ward ’82. Ward established BHS records in the discus, javelin and shot during her four years competing in track and field, and was also a member of a record-setting 4-by-100 relay team. She also played soccer and basketball in high school and competed in field events for four years at Southeastern Massachusetts University, qualifying for the Division III nationals in javelin in 1984.
  • Kevin Paul Dupont ’71, lead hockey writer and columnist for The Boston Globe. A former sports reporter for The New York Times, Kevin is a member of the media section of the hockey Hall of Fame.
  • Dave Wilson, whose 30-year Bedford coaching career spanned boys’ and girls’ soccer, softball and middle school basketball. His teams won a state championship and two sectional titles.
  • The 2001 boys’ soccer team, coached by Wilson, which finished with a record of 21-1-1. The Buccaneers won the DCL and the North Sectionals before suffering its only loss, 1-0 in the state semifinals.
