In 1792 one hundred pounds was raised to build a school in each of the four quarters of town and to provide a teacher in each school. In 1806 a new Center school was built. In 1854 new schools were built in the East, North and South districts of town and the West school was completely repaired.

In 1856 the Center school was torn down. A town hall building, with two school rooms included, was built.

1890 the two classrooms were found to be inadequate and a modern building, known as the Union School, was built. It still exists in a new form as part of the present Town Center, located behind the present Town Hall, which was originally built in 1928 as the Junior High School.

The photos show the red-painted East School (ca. 1854) at 37 Old Billerica Road, and the white-painted West School (ca. 1840) at 209 Concord Road. Both buildings are now private residences.
