In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, October 6 – 12, the Bedford Fire Department cordially invites the community to an open house at the Fire Station from 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday, October 12.

This year’s theme is Prevent Kitchen Fires.  Cooking brings family and friends together for special occasions and can be an outlet for creativity. Did you know….  cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and injuries in the home? By following a few safety tips you can prevent these fires and help keep your family safe.

Cook with Caution

  • Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the oven or stove.
  • Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the  kitchen for even a short period of time, turn off the stove.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire-oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains- away from your stovetop.
  • Have a “kids-free zone” of at least 3 feet around the stove.

If You Have a Cooking Fire

  • Just get out! When you leave, close the door behind you to contain the fire.
  • Call 9-1-1 after you leave the home from a cell phone or a neighbor’s phone.
  • If you try to fight the fire, be sure others are getting out and you have a clear way out.
  • Keep a lid nearby when you are cooking to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
  • For an oven fire turn off the heat and keep the oven door closed.

If you have any questions about how you can prevent kitchen fires, or any other fire related questions please contact the Bedford Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Office at 781-275-5266.
