At their meeting Monday night, November 18, the Selectmen approved a Preservation Restriction Agreement with the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) for Bedford’s railroad depot. The building is listed in the State Register of Historic Places as a contributing property to the Bedford Depot National Register District. The agreement is a condition of a grant received from MHC for building restoration funds.

The Special Town Meeting on November 4, 2013, passed a community preservation article that would also fund exterior renovations to this building. The additional funds of $73,400 made up for a higher than expected estimate of costs and a shortfall in the amount of funding received from the MHC.

The Agreement requires that the Town assume the “cost of maintenance, repair, and administration of the premises to preserve the characteristics which contribute to [its] architectural, archaeological, and historic integrity.” The Agreement also contains conditions restricting alterations and requiring MHC approval for proposed work that might alter or affect the characteristics that the Agreement is intended to preserve.
