State Representatives Ken Gordon (D-Bedford) and Lenny Mirra (R-West Newbury), have agreed to friendly wager on Saturday’s MIAA Division 4 North Sectional Final football game between Bedford (8-1) and host Pentucket (7-1).  Pentucket’s school district covers the towns of Groveland, Merrimac and West Newbury.   The representative of the unsuccessful team will donate two bags of nonperishable food items and a box of books to a food pantry in the victor’s district.  In addition, the losing Representative will display the town’s flag in his State House office on the following Wednesday.

Pentucket is the top-seeded team in the tournament, and Bedford is seeded third.  The game will be played at 1:30 p.m. in West Newbury.

Rep. Gordon, fresh off his winning wager with Minority Leader Brad Jones (R-North Reading), whose district covers Lynnfield, showed confidence in Bedford’s chances. “I am delighted that my fellow freshman representative from the North Shore has engaged in this worthwhile and fun challenge.  However, he will soon learn that while Pentucket may be made up of players from three different towns, even the collective efforts of twice that many towns will not be enough to derail Bedford’s title drive.”

“I look forward to seeing the West Newbury, Groveland, and Merrimac flags in Rep. Gordon’s office. Bedford is always a strong contender but I like the Sachems chances this year. I am glad to join Rep. Gordon in this friendly wager. It is for a good cause and good fun.”

Gordon previously donated a box of books to the Melrose Food Pantry as a result of that high school’s victory over Burlington, and will accept the donation of two bags of non-perishable groceries from the Minority Leader this week. He increased the stakes this week not only because the momentum of the Bucs’ season, “but so that in the unlikely event Bedford does not prevail, Rep. Mirra can split up the three packages among his three towns evenly”

The winner of Saturday’s sectional final will visit the champion of Division 4 South in the state semi-final the following week.
