BasketballAfter a close loss to Acton Boxboro on Tuesday night the Bedford girls walked into the Tewksbury High School Gym on Thursday, February 6, determined to get back to their winning ways.  When the opening tap occurred, they got to work quickly coming out and scoring 38 points in the first half with a three point shot barrage that opened up an 18 point lead at halftime over an aggressive Tewksbury team.   Bedford went on to cruise to a 20 point victory (56 – 36).

The girls came out of the gate with some of their best passing and ball movement all season while playing their typical aggressive scrambling defense.  The team’s scoring leader in the half was Amanda Cohen who hit three three’s and had 11 points in the period (13 overall).  In all, the girls hit 7 out of 11 shots  (63%) from behind the three point arc. Olivia MacLellan brought her deadly shooting eye to the game connecting on all 7 of her shots,  4 from the field, including one three, and 3 from the foul line to score 12 points and Samantha Cowen once again played her usual role and was the team’s high scorer with 15 points.

The team defense and rebounding was the key to the second half.  Tewksbury continued to press and play aggressive defense in an effort to get back in the game. But with the help of Alaina Greaney and Brianna Champion dominating the boards, Bedford was able to hold off a number of Tewksbury challenges.  The only scare was a brief Tewksbury run early in the fourth quarter cutting the lead to 14, but a beautiful driving layup by Keara Russell down the right side of the lane put an end to the run and turned the momentum back in Bedford’s favor.  The team achieved their goal of getting back in the “W” column and did it in a true team fashion as every girl was able to get minutes on the floor and help contribute to the win.

The girls will play Weston at home on Friday February 7th at 7:00 pm and will honor the team’s seniors.
