The East Coast Wizards and Mass Hockey hosted a Gold Medal viewing party at the Edge Sports Center at noon on Thursday, with pizza provided by the Girl’s/Women’s District of Mass Hockey. In the beginning, there was pizza, soda and a crowd of youth hockey players, mostly girls, watching the US Olympic Women’s Hockey team face off against their Canadian rivals.
All of Boston’s network television stations and the Boston Globe covered the party, along with The Citizen and Bedford TV. Until Canada tied the score with just over a minute to play in the third period, the crowd was optimistic. They went silent when Canada scored the winning goal in sudden death overtime.
Hockey coach Paul Kennedy who has worked with the Olympic team’s captain Meghen Duggan since she was a young player was philosophical about the loss: “There are a lot of hockey teams and players who don’t have an Olympic medal at all,” he said in telling a story about his daughter Courtney’s bronze medal that was envied by one of the Boston Bruin’s best after the 2006 Olympics.
