The magic of social media, email and old-fashioned, door-to-door leafleting turned up a crowd concerned about the future of Fawn Lake at 9 am on Saturday, May 3.

At the behest of neighbor Laura Bullock, dozens of families, kids and dogs gathered in the trailhead parking lot adjacent to Fawn Lake for an informational meeting with the Community Preservation Committee. Many in the group then hiked around Bedford’s best known dug pond.

At issue is a concern that Fawn Lake may be left to “return to nature” because of the cost to dredge its shallow depth. Plant growth proliferates because sunlight penetrates to roots in the mud at the bottom of the pond.

Bullock’s invitation noted, “If you enjoy using the lake for hiking, fishing, ice skating, snowshoeing, nature watching or just relaxing, please come to an informational meeting with the [Community] Preservation Committee to voice your concerns.”

The group heard Adrienne St. John of the Bedford DPW; Community Preservation Committee Chair Gene Clerkin accompanied by committee members Don Corey, Cathy Cordes, Christina Wilgren, and Vito LaMura; as well as Margot Fleischman, Selectman Liaison to the CPC. According to Don Corey, Fawn Lake and other ponds in Bedford were dug many years ago as “ice ponds” by immigrant laborers hired by local landowners who needed to stock their ice houses against summer’s heat.

Bullock’s invitation leaflet concluded, ” Fawn Lake is a Bedford treasure that needs to be preserved.”

A Facebook page, Fawn Lake at Bedford Springs, has garnered nearly 100 “likes” since it was created on Friday; the group will use it to share information and community concerns.
