With round one in the Baystate Baseball Tournament of Champions in the rear view mirror, the Bedford Baystate C team entered the second round with a new batch of opponents and high hopes for continued success. Bedford was scheduled to play six games against Arlington, North Andover, and Hudson, and is focused on qualifying for the next trophy weekend on August 2-3.

Second round games kicked off on Saturday at Hunnewell Fields in Natick, which hosted eight C division games throughout the day. Bedford (7-1) was matched up against Arlington (3-4) and for the first five innings, it was quite a battle. Nick Solitro pitched the first three innings for Bedford, allowing a single run, but the Bedford bats were eerily quiet. With the score tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Matthew Kazangian crushed a two-out, bases-loaded triple over the left fielder’s head to drive in three runs, and with a three-run cushion Dylan DiGangi had no difficulty closing out the game and sealing a 4-1 victory for Bedford.

Monday evening found the Baby Bucs in North Andover, squaring off against a team that was the runner-up in the Little League state finals. But despite the credentials of their opponent, Bedford C grabbed two runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back, cruising to an 8-0 victory. James Brosgol pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five, and also chipped in at the plate with two hits and a walk. The Bucs also got strong showings from Jake Morrison, who pitched two shutout innings and reached base twice, and from Nick Solitro, who had three hits and played solid defense at shortstop and catcher.

Bedford C now sits at 9-1 and remains in second place in a C division that has swelled to 37 teams, ranking just behind 10-0 Chelmsford and one spot ahead of 9-1 Billerica National on the head-to-head tiebreaker. The stats continue to tell the story of a well-balanced team with stellar pitching, as the team ERA has shrunk to a microscopic 1.017 and the team batting average is a respectable .257.

The Baby Bucs next take the field against Hudson (6-3) on Wednesday evening at home. If you’re in town, come by I Field next to JGMS at 5:45 pm to hop on the bandwagon and cheer the boys on. It’s a team definitely worth rooting for.
