International Walk-Bike to School Day took place in Bedford this morning, just as sunshine began to replace early morning clouds and drizzle.

Walk organizer and Healthy Bedford Coordinator Carla Olson noted that the “next-walk-or bike day” can be any day that an individual, family or neighborhood group chooses to walk or bike to school. She encourages checking www.bedfordma.gov/Healthy-Bedford for ideas on routes, or for remote drop off points near the schools to facilitate more manageable distances.

Selectman Margot Fleischman continued in her role as a chaperone for the walk from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Pine Hill Road, along neighboring sidewalks to Hayden Lane and into the school. Fleischman reported that while in past years there have been as many as twenty walkers, in one very rainy year she chaperoned a single child, so this year’s crew of walkers was small, but not surprising given the early morning rain and dreary skies.

The Lane School bike ride was cancelled this year because construction in the Marshall’s parking lot prohibited access to the Narrow Gauge Rail Trail that leads to Fawn Lake and then to the school.

The sun was shining by the time a goodly crowd of Bedford’s primary school walkers stepped off, walking from the Church of our Savior parking lot to Davis School. Andrea Salipante, assistant principal at Davis School, said “There must have been 150 people.”

Moms-and-DadsMoms, dads, siblings and pets joined the parade that stretched as far as the eye could see, easily filling the sidewalk between the church driveway and the school road.

Next year’s Massachusetts Walk/Bike to School day will take place on Wednesday, May 6, 2015.
