Bedford Firefighter Christian Dispena Receives State Police Lifesaving Award

MSP-certificateBedford’s Fire Chief David Grunes is proud to announce that a Bedford firefighter recently received a commendation and award from the Massachusetts State Police for his off-duty actions over the summer, which assisted in saving the life of a man having a medical emergency.

According to the State Police Commendation, Firefighter Christian Dispena and another man, Mark Harding” performed CPR on a man who suffered a medical emergency and went into cardiac arrest on Monday, June 9, 2014 in Brighton. State Troopers Matthew B. Cesvette and Steven V. Walker arrived quickly, and Firefighter Dispena worked with them to perform CPR until the Boston Fire Department arrived. The victim regained a pulse and consciousness while he was being transported to the hospital.

“For their selfless initiative in assisting an unknown victim, Mr. Christian Dispena and Mr. Mark Harding are hereby commended in Personnel Orders and awarded the Massachusetts State Police Lifesaving Award,” the citation read. The Troopers also received the same award.

The awards were given at the Grand Staircase of the State House on October 17. A total of 33 awards were given for heroic actions all around the state.

“I am very proud of Firefighter Dispena for his quick thinking and good instincts, which saved the life of another person,” Chief Grunes said. “As firefighters, we are never truly off duty, and Firefighter Dispena’s actions remind us why.”
