The Department of Public Works held its semi-annual Recycling Event Day, generously sponsored by Republic Services, the Town’s trash and recycling hauler,  on the morning of September 27. Over the past two years Senior Manager Bruce Stanas of Republic Services has donated funds to support both recycling events including collecting items that are not acceptable at the curbside.  Republic Services is an active community partner to Bedford, also providing $1000 each year in scholarship money to a BHS student involved in recycling.

During the three hour event there was a steady stream of cars dropping off Styrofoam, electronic waste, and paper to be shredded.  The Styrofoam vendor, Dave Sherman of Re-Foam It, had increased the types of items he accepted to include the popular Styrofoam peanuts.  At the spring event, which was his first with Bedford, he collected a half-truck full of Styrofoam, but this time he collected nearly twice that amount.

Over 160 cars came through the drop off event, some of them repeatedly. Lines were short, and an experienced crew of both DPW workers and vendor staff moved residents along smoothly.  At least three times as much electronic waste was collected at this event, as compared to last year. Paper shredding was also popular, and the change to shredding off-site has cut down on both the lines and the traffic jams at the DPW.

Call to Schedule Pick-up for Large Items

New this year, Republic Services and the DPW are excited to offer more opportunities to put items out curbside.  These items are permitted upon request, but residents must call 1-800-442-9006 to schedule a pickup:

  • One 35-gallon container of construction debris under 50 pounds per week
  • One bulky item per week, including a four foot roll of carpet (also under 50 pounds)
  • Two CRT’s per month: the large, old style TVs or computer monitors
  • Two white goods per month (refrigerators, stoves, air conditioners, etc.)

These items will not be picked up unless scheduled in advance. All questions regarding what can be picked up and the pickup schedule should be directed to Republic Services.

Spring 2015 DPW Recycling Day Date Set

The next DPW recycling event Day will be Saturday May 30th 2015, and will include Styrofoam, scrap metal, and paper collection.  If residents have suggestions for items to be added to the event, or general feedback, please contact Gretchen Carey at [email protected]
