At 8:45 in the morning on the day after Christmas, the 6th grade boys Bedford Blue basketball team took the court for the first of three games in the Woburn Holiday Tournament. Despite the early hour and post-holiday grogginess, the boys came ready to play.

The opening game against Woburn presented Bedford with an early challenge from the orange-and-white clad hosts, but after a tight opening quarter, the Bucs hit their stride as halftime approached and spent the second half building a double-digit lead. When the clock ran out Bedford came home with a 37-17 victory.

Saturday at 11:15 found the Bucs going up against Methuen. This game was a defensive battle from the outset, with Methuen’s big men having the size advantage, Bedford’s guards having the speed advantage, and neither time getting much accomplished on offense. Halftime found Bedford clinging to a narrow 13-9 lead, and with points at a premium, the second half entered its final seconds with the teams tied at 23. A basket by Zack Poor with five seconds to go gave Bedford a thrilling 25-23 win.

Bedford finished up the tournament on Sunday at 4:15 against Needham. The Bucs jumped out to an early 10-2 lead, and after weathering a mid-second half run by their opponents, cruised to a 47-29 victory and a perfect 3-0 tournament record.

Outside of tournament play, with three regular season weekends of travel basketball in the books, Bedford Blue sits at 4-2 (not counting the 3-0 record from the tournament). The boys resume play on Saturday at Concord-Carlisle, and host Belmont at Lane School Sunday at 11:30.

Coaches: Matt Hayes, Tom Mulligan, and Rick Proulx
