Skating is a family affair for Bedford’s Caroline Holt Larson who joined the Esprit de Corps adult synchronized skating team at Lexington’s Hayden Recreation Center when her mother Emily Holt, currently a resident of Carleton-Willard Village, was a member 28 years ago. A third-generation skater, Larson’s daughter Anna competed with The Colonials in Acton for nine years.
Although competition isn’t her favorite part of the sport (“I just love the camaraderie and exercise,” says Larson), she will travel with the team to participate in the Eastern Synchronized Skating Sectional Championships at Lake Placid this weekend. “We are practicing extra hard at crazy ice hours. We usually get on the ice around 8:30 and practice until 10:30 pm.”
Skating to “Girl’s Night Out” with wine bottle appliques on their dresses, the Esprit skaters range in age from 23 “to women in their 60’s.” Larson commented, “When I started skating on Esprit de Corps Adult, I was one of the youngsters….now I am the oldest!”
Editor’s note: Synchronized team skating, formerly called “precision skating,” is one of the fastest growing elements of competitive figure skating; the sport is poised to be part of the 2018 Olympics (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmarJOD3-RI)
