DPW Director Roy Sorenson reports that another 15 inches of snow fell on Bedford during the blast of stormy weather over Valentine’s Day weekend. “The storm was extremely difficult due to drifting snow,” said Sorenson, “so it was a challenge keeping roads clean.”

According to the DPW’s count, Bedford’s cumulative snowfall for the 2014/2015 season is a staggering 106 inches, with 94 inches falling during the several weeks. “On January 23 we only had 12 inches of snow,” said Sorenson, “most of which came around Thanksgiving, the rest came in an inch here, and an inch there.”

Selectmen Chair Margot Fleischman lauded Bedford’s DPW crews for their diligence and hard work through the season’s storms. “People have come up to me and mentioned how our roads are so well-cleared,” she said, “we’re all impressed.”

Sorenson complimented his crew for their excellent work in keeping Bedford’s streets clear. “Right now,” he added, “we are focusing on widening some roads which has to be done with heavy equipment and takes time. We are also continuing on sidewalks and pushing back corners where there are visibility issues. We are working on a plan to begin snow removal.”

Sorenson cautioned, “[Bedford’s] weather pattern remains active over the next couple of weeks – we could get a significant storm this weekend.”

Wednesday noon’s Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) status update includes this statement about the potential for stormy weather this weekend: “[The National Weather Service] is also watching a potential storm for Saturday night and Sunday. There is a lot of uncertainty on the expected precipitation type. At this time it looks as though snow may change to a wintry mix and possibly even change to just rain for a time inland. Along and near the coast including Boston and Providence, it presently looks as though snow will change to rain with most of the precipitation falling as rain. The precipitation type forecasts may change, however, as the eventual path of the system becomes more evident. Regardless of the precipitation type, an inch to possibly as much as an inch and a half of water equivalent may fall. This amount of precipitation, whether it falls as snow or rain, could seriously exacerbate roof loading issues.”
