Public’s PARCC Concerns Voiced to School Committee.

April 17, 2015

By Mitch Evans.

SC-NewsAt Tuesday evening’s School Committee Meeting, a member of the public, Nancy Wolk, presented her concerns about the recent PARCC exams being piloted in our schools. Wolk has two children in the Bedford school system and she highlighted several areas of unease, including private company Pearson’s monopoly on the software, textbooks and now testing system that our schools must use. She was also concerned about the amount of time taken to prepare and then to take these exams (PARCC is designed to be administered twice a year, every year, starting in Grade 3.) While the school committee thanked Wolk for her comments, they explained that the meeting provided an opportunity for members of the public to offer opinions, but that this could not open up a dialogue with the committee members. Therefore no response was given by the committee on any points raised. The second wave of PARCC exams will commence in schools, mid May.

The Bedford Citizen is, however, now able to publish a letter dated March 6, 2015, from Superintendent Jon Sills to the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education in Massachusetts, Mitchell Chester, regarding the piloting of PARCC in the Bedford schools. PARCC continues to be a hot topic for debate.
