On June 13th, Katie will be riding her bike in Bedford’s PMC Kids Ride for the first time. This event benefits such a great cause, The Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Katie and some of her friends will be riding the half mile course together.

Her mom shared some of the reasons that Katie’s riding:

“Cancer has affected our family and friends of our family. Katie never had a chance to meet her maternal grandmother or paternal grandfather because their lives were lost to cancer before she was born.

“Also, in December 2013, Maddie, the 2 year old daughter of our old college friend, was diagnosed with Stage 4 neuroblastoma.   As friends, there was so little I could do to help. I scoured journal articles trying to find the latest treatment options and newest promising clinical trials, hoping I could pass on information that could save Maddie’s life. But sadly, Maddie passed away in October 2014.

“As a scientist, I have always wanted to find the cure for cancer, but of course, things are never as simple or easy as that. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is dedicated to finding the cure for cancer.

“We are dedicating Katie’s bike ride in remembrance of Maddie and Katie’s grandparents. We are raising money for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support the innovative research that the hospital does toward the goal of finding a cure for pediatric cancer.“  -Katie’s Mom, Cindy Chiu
