In honor of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the third grade girls travel soccer teams from Bedford combined Thursday evening to play their own version of the World Cup tournament. Full rosters from both the Bedford Bears and the Bedford Lightning came together to create eight teams made up of two or three players. The teams chose countries to represent, donned matching bandanas and then played hard.
It was an exciting tournament, with four matches heading to exciting sudden death overtimes. In the end Team Brazil overtook Team Spain for the Cup, with spectators chanting and rooting for both sides.
The athletes were respectful and supportive, and played with leadership, teamwork and focus in a wonderful display and celebration of the sport of soccer and what these kids have worked hard for and learned over their first year of travel soccer. The Bedford Soccer program has much to look forward to for many years with this very talented group of young athletes.
The 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins this Saturday in Canada and can be watched on the Fox Sports family of channels.
