Cafe Luigi Still Searching for a New Home

By Julie McCay Turner

Cafe LuigiIn a telephone interview on Friday morning, Richard Stoico confirmed that he is actively searching for a new home for Café Luigi, although limited availability in Bedford may mean that the popular restaurant would relocate in a nearby town.

“We appreciate the positive feedback that we hear nearly every day,” said Stoico, noting that he is well aware of his customers’ disappointment, and how much they miss Luigi’s.

Bedford’s Economic Development Coordinator Alyssa Sandoval has been working to find space that would allow Café Luigi to remain in Bedford.

At the town meeting where the developer’s proposal for rezoning was defeated (https://thebedfordcitizen.org/2015/11/05/special-town-meeting-2015-defeats-petitioners-change-to-marketplace-zoning-map-in-article-3/), he stated that Luigi’s owners had decided to retire rather than continue operating the restaurant. The current article tells a completely different story. At the town meeting the allegation was aired that perhaps the developer was asking rents that are too high. Is that the REAL reason that Luigi’s is looking to relocate? The developer certainly should not be expecting a lot of grace from the town at this point, when by appearances he outright lied to the citizenry in a public forum.

A friend wondered if they could go to the area where Flat Bread and Bamboo are. Is there open space there? Also, I saw that the oriental rug store is closing. Is there open space next to the oriental rug store, where the two spaces could combine. Just thinking out loud.

Good news that they want to stay here. The rumors were that the owners didn’t want to open a new restaurant for various reasons. Did you find out WHY they don’t want to be in the Marketplace?
