Bedford’s inaugural Walkabout and Tree Lighting, the combined effort of several Town Departments and the Chamber of Commerce, came off without a hitch late on Saturday afternoon.
The holiday fete began with a nearly standing-room-only laser light show in the Bedford High School Auditorium. After the performance, families enjoyed the afternoon’s mild weather as they walked to Bedford Common.

Live music entertained the crowd on the Common until Citizen of the Year Peter Grey flipped a switch that illuminated thousands of twinkling white lights in the trees.
Santa arrived soon after the lights went on, arriving on Elm Street atop Ladder One, the town’s newest fire apparatus. With a wave and a hearty “Ho, Ho, Ho!” Santa strode into the throng of families and children who had gathered for a quick visit with the jolly fellow.
Throughout the event, Chamber of Commerce members along Great Road hospitably opened their doors, or set up on the sidewalk to offer snacks. Businesses with locations further afield gathered in the Great Room of Old Town Hall where Red Heat Tavern served chili and cider, and a variety of businesses introduced their wares.
