Individuals and businesses often ask how they can support Veterans at Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, (Bedford VA).  From sponsoring large events, to taking a Veteran out for lunch, there is something that everyone can do to thank and support our Veterans during the holidays and all through the year.

For example, this month the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary (ALA) Middlesex District5 hosted their 68th Annual “Gift Shop” bringing donations of presents individually chosen for every inpatient Veteran.

The women wrap hundreds of presents in a large hospital conference room amid holiday cheer, colorful paper and bows. When the wrapping is done, they visit every single inpatient Veteran personally, and even help to unwrap the gift for Veterans requiring assistance.  This year more than 350 presents were given to the Veterans who enjoyed each thoughtful detail, from the tag on the gift to the clothing inside that is matched to the Veterans size.

Ladies Auxiliary members Carol Quigley and Joan Publicover are two of the exemplary volunteers who organize this special tradition.   “It’s so heartwarming to be part of this event for the Veterans,” said Carol Quigley, “just seeing the smiles on their faces is so special. Giving them five minutes of your time is like you gave them a million dollars.”

Hospital Director Christine Croteau thanked the Auxiliary members for all the ways they make a difference in the lives of Veterans at Bedford VA including Bingo, trips, hosting dinners, and other gift-giving occasions, “They truly exemplify commitment, advocacy and caring,” said Director Croteau.

Many organizations and companies foster a culture of giving that includes remembering our nations’ heroes. Donations of time, gift cards, movie tickets or supplies, are examples of  contributions businesses make that enhance the daily lives of Veterans. Have an idea?
