Sharon Lawrence McDonald, the Children’s Librarian at the Bedford Library in 1996, and a group of young patrons created a time capsule to be opened in twenty years’ time marked “Open in 2016.”

McDonald has been invited to join current Children’s Librarian Bethany Klem and the children of Bedford when the capsule is unlocked at 10:30 on Friday morning, January 15, a release day when there is no school.

According to McDonald, “Members of that year’s summer reading program voted on their favorite books of 1996, and Bob Batt made a videotape of the end-of-summer party where the time capsule was made.

“It’s in a strong plastic container, sealed with a chain, and was deep in the back closet,” continued McDonald, “Bethany discovered it and said “What’s this????”

Plans were laid for the  ‘capsule’s eventual opening, and for creating a new capsule that will be stored for Bedford’s children in 2036. Youngsters at tomorrow’s ceremony will be invited to contribute their thoughts about life Bedford in 2016.
