What do the American Red Cross, the Bedford High School (BHS) Red Cross Club and the Bedford Citizen’s Scholarship Foundation (CSF) have in common?

At first glance, it might seem like an unusual alliance. However, the consolidated effort of these three groups represents a model for partnership and a win-win for Bedford. The Bedford blood drive held at BHS on January 22 was co-sponsored by the BHS Red Cross Club and CSF Dollars for Scholars, and by the end of the day, 67 units were donated.

American Red Cross Account Manager Caroline Fedele commented, “Today’s blood drive was the initial Bedford effort to more effectively utilize professional staff, volunteers, time and money to efficiently meet the demand for blood in our area. This consolidation will also provide an excellent opportunity to recognize and reward BHS seniors with scholarship aid.”

In the past, blood drives have been held at various Bedford locations. Fedele continued, “Going forward, the Red Cross will hold four blood drives per year at Bedford High School. Today’s turnout and success are very rewarding especially during a time when the need is urgent.

“The BHS Red Cross Club did a terrific job both before and during the blood drive”, Fedele noted.  “They actively promoted the drive, assisted fellow students in the sign-up process and were onsite during the day meeting and greeting donors and appropriately offering assistance with a smile. We had a significant number of student donors and many of the students were first time donors.

“Thank you to all the donors who so generously gave today and helped move our total closer to an end goal of more than 201 units by May 31” she concluded. “We hope to collect at least 134 units during our next drive on April 6 and maximize the potential scholarship aid that will be available from the Red Cross to senior students. The maximum scholarship funding per high school is $2,500 payable in $250 scholarships.  Let’s do our Bedford best to reach the highest level and award $250 scholarships to 10 Class of 2016 students.”

CSF President Janet Werth explained, “The American Red Cross, as a result of the Bedford Blood Drive, will fund scholarships to be awarded by CSF of Bedford to graduating BHS students based on academic, athletic, civic or community merit and who meet the Red Cross Scholarship criteria. When students apply online, the selection criteria applicable for each scholarship is described.”

Mark your calendar for Saturday, February 6 and plan to attend the CSF Trivia Night. It is a fun event with 1st and 2nd Place Prizes awarded to winning tables, raffles and camaraderie with proceeds going to fund scholarship aid for Bedford seniors.
