Dear Families and Friends,

About a six weeks ago, Atlantic Research Partners, the search firm that my home town of Brookline commissioned to find a new superintendent, reached out to me to invite me to apply.  I hesitated for quite some time before agreeing.  How could I not have hesitated? In my present position, the fruit of 16 wonderful Bedford years, I am blessed to have an unbelievable leadership team, to work among incredible teachers and support staff, to enjoy the support of an exceptional school committee, and to serve a town that truly cares about education.  We have all done such great work together to serve our students and I know that important work remains ahead.

But a number of factors, both personal and professional, compelled me to enter the process to explore the opportunity.  Brookline, where I worked prior to coming to Bedford and where my youngest daughter attended school, is an urban/suburban community that also strongly supports education.  It happens, at this moment, to face tremendous challenges.  When I was informed this week that I am a finalist candidate, I found myself excited by the possibility of making a difference in a significantly larger and more complex school system. And while deeply saddened at the thought of leaving Bedford, I am energized by the promise of personal growth that this opportunity would afford.

Final meetings and interviews will take place during the week following February vacation, and the Brookline School Committee will make its final decision in the week or two that follow.  I will keep you all posted.  Please know that, should this change come to pass, I will work closely with our school committee and senior staff to plan for a constructive leadership transition.

Best wishes,
Jon

Dr. Sills you are fantastic and I’d hate to see you go.
