The First Annual ‘Bedford Rotary Run’ on May 7 – A New Tradition Emerges

Rotary-Run-LogoThe Rotary Club of Bedford, the local club that created the Breakfast with Santa tradition, is bringing a new event to town. And Rotary is looking forward to it becoming a new town tradition.

ROTARY RUN is a 5-mile trail/road race, plus a short track kid’s run, and a 2-mile historic community walk scheduled for May 7th – the Saturday of Mother’s Day weekend. Honoring all mothers and celebrating motherhood is woven into the fun and festivities of the event. On another important level Rotary Run aims to raise awareness and funds for Rotary’s service to the community and humanity. At the same time it will also celebrate volunteering by serving as a platform for other local organization fundraising.

“We hope to have lots of families out for the event”, reported Bedford Rotary’s Race Director Devon
Messecar. “We love all moms”, she said, “the biological ones, the host-moms, foster care moms,
adoptive moms, grand-moms and all other kinds of motherly figures that impact our lives every
day!”

Starting and ending at the Bedford High School Track, the Rotary Run events kick off at 9:00 AM with
the Kid’s Run around the track. Then at 10:00 AM the 5-Mile Run and 2-Mile Walk take off, following
their individual routes around town and back to the BHS Track finish line.

Participants following the 5-Mile Rotary Run route will enjoy the peace and beauty of running along
many of Bedford’s interconnected trails, and several of the community’s roadways. The 2-Mile walkers
will sight-see Bedford’s past and historic beauty as their route takes them through various
town neighborhoods.

While the club views the Run as a fun time for individuals and families, they also see it as an event
with an important higher purpose. Registration fees and Rotary Run sponsorships will help fund the
Rotary Club of Bedford Foundation which, in-turn, funds the local and international service projects
Bedford Rotary undertakes. Those projects can’t happen without funding.

“We obviously hope to make this an annual event”, says Rotary Club of Bedford President Diana Jarvis. “I think the Mother’s Day theme and tie-in is huge because it focuses around family and it focuses around community”. “The thing that I’m really excited about is all the fundraising”, she said, “all the money that we get through fundraising we’re going to give back to the community.

Recognizing that it’s not alone in its fundraising needs, Bedford Rotary’s Rotary Run offers an easy, no-
hassle opportunity for non-denominational, non-political volunteer organizations to fundraise as
individuals on a team. When registering for Rotary Run runners and walkers can create or join a Team under their own team name and then ask friends and family to pledge an amount to them for each
mile they run or walk. Each participant collects his/her own pledges for their “cause”. Details about
this opportunity can be found at Rotary Run – Organization Pledges
