The Hanscom Spouses Club recently awarded scholarships to graduating seniors and military spouses during the 55th annual HSC Scholarship Awards Night at the Minuteman Commons. HSC officers awarded $43,000 to 17 high school graduates and five spouses, each of whom will pursue degrees in the fall.

Sawyer Krueger, who will attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the fall, was awarded The Chief of Staff Award as the top academic achieving student.

Other students were awarded scholarships named in memory of former members of the Hanscom community. Those scholarship recipients include:

The Lt. Gen. Melvin F. (Nick) Chubb, Jr. Award  – David Amirault, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The Jeanne M. Richter Memorial Award – Trenton Sanders, Hillsborough Community College
The Carmen Schipper Award – Lindsay Blount, University of Massachusetts, Lowell
The Col. Chuck Jones Memorial Award – Matthew Knoedler, Colorado State University, Fort Collins
The Brian Sweeney Memorial Award – Jake Hernandez, University of California, Santa Cruz

Several other students awarded scholarships were: Shane Murphy, Lasell College; Brendan Gallagher, University of New Hampshire; Peter T. Paul, School of Business & Economics; Sydney Bidwell, University of California, Davis; Caitlen Epperson, University of Maine; Ingrid Bidwell, University of California, Davis; Morgan Kitchen, Brigham Young University; Alec Mauk, University of Rhode Island; Austin Leonard, College of Charleston; Cassandra Harbour, Northeastern University; Joshua Fournier, University of Miami; Joseph Williams, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; and Tait Zeiner, University of South Carolina.

The following military spouses also received scholarships: Lindsay Blount, attending University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Holly Babineau, attending University of Massachusetts, Lowell; Dionne Higbee, attending Cortiva Massage School; Nicole Garza, attending Huntington College of Health and Science; and Cecile Rorebeck-Lamarre, attending Roxbury CC, RN major.

The Hanscom Spouses Club raised $43,000 this year from many corporate donors and benefactors. Without these contributions, and the work by HSC members through the Thrift Shop, auction and scholarship committee, the HSC scholarship program would not be possible.

According to organizers, volunteers on the scholarship selection committee carefully reviewed applicant packages, and made thoughtful, considered choices for each student’s award.

HSC members who attended the annual event, said they were inspired by the biographies of the students who were awarded scholarships. The opportunity to support these students in furthering their educational goals was motivation enough for the hard work done by all involved.

Throughout the past 55 years, the Hanscom Spouses Club has offered scholarships to military dependent children and spouses. The intent of these scholarships is to support graduating high school seniors and spouses of members of any branch of the armed forces.

The first HSC scholarship award was given in 1961.
