The Middlesex Phantoms Girls U6 team had a competitive and successful weekend at the 40th annual Needham Memorial Day/GPS College Showcase tournament. More than 1,200 teams from around New England participate in the tournament each year.
Bedford played in four tight games against strong opposition from Massachusetts, Maine and New Jersey teams. Playing in weather that ranged from 93 degree sunshine on Saturday to cold rain on Monday, the Middlesex Phantoms won two of their three group games, qualifying the team for the final on goal difference.
The Phantoms faced New Jersey’s strong Morris United team in the preliminary round, and lost 1-0. Due to conflicts and injuries, the team played the entire match undermanned. As fate would have it, however, the two teams faced each other again in the tournament finals.
The Phantoms came out quickly with Syd Hall and Jennifer Rennich scoring early goals. Morris fought back in a hotly-contested second half to tie the score at 2-2 after 90 minutes, sending the game into overtime. The teams played evenly in two scoreless overtime sessions.
Farrell O’Shaughnessy stood firm in the Phantom’s goal while the teams traded penalty kicks to resolve the match. Jacqueline Stevens stepped forward to nail the final kick and win the tournament for the Phantoms.
