Bedford’s U10 girls capped off a strong summer season with second place in Chelmsford’s “Girls of Summer” tournament

The Bedford U10 softball team spent the last weekend of July on the softball fields in Chelmsford at the annual “Girls of Summer Tournament” hosted by the Chelmsford Blue Crush.

Game One Friday July 29th vs. Tyngsboro.  Score Bedford 9-1

Bedford came out strong and avenged a loss from two weeks ago against a solid Tyngsboro team.  Sydney Poor scored  3 RBI’s with additional  hits by Sydney Cox and Kaylee Grace.  Defensively Sydney Cox made play after play at first while outfielder Alyx Rossi kept a couple outfield field hits to singles.  Kaylee Grace made a great play covering home with a nice flip from catcher Sydney Poor on a pass ball to cap off her 11-strikeout performance.

Game Two Saturday July 30th vs. Chelmsford Score Bedford 16-7

The 8 am start did nothing to slow down this hot hitting team.  Bedford’s first five batters crossed home to start off the game with a 5-0 lead and Bedford never fell behind.  The hitting streak continued with a double by Laney Mead and the bottom of the order came up strong with five hits in a row by Alyx Rossi, Kate Marino, Caitlin Lembo, Gianna Missiti, and Healy Weisman.  Coco Steele, Lulu Steele, and Kaylee Grace combined for 8 strikeouts and had some defensive help with fantastic plays in the field by Sydney Poor and Coco Steele.

Game Three Saturday July 30th vs. Seabrook NH Score Bedford 13-0

Kaylee Grace came out strong for the afternoon game and pitched a perfect game.  She had 8 strikeouts and Sydney Cox was stellar at first base with five unassisted putouts to keep runners from getting on base.  The girls came out on fire offensively with all five first hitters crossing home plate to run rule the first inning.  Coco Steele’s perfectly laid down bunt as the number two hitter sparked the offense.  Sydney Cox added in a three-run homerun to go along with solid hits by Sydney Poor, Laney Mead, and Lulu Steele.

Game Four Sunday July 31st vs. Seabrook NH Semi-final Score Bedford 12-3

Bedford’s lights out play in the pool play round earned them the number one seed and they had to face off against Seabrook in the semi-finals.  Kaylee Grace started off the game with a single and came home on Laney Mead’s double.  The scoring continued with a single and double by Sydney Poor and Sydney Cox.  Bedford had to play on their toes as Seabrook came back from the losing side of the perfect game Saturday swinging and scored two runs on a leadoff single and triple to start the first.  Kaylee Grace quickly settled in and pitched a solid game with 4 strikeouts and some help from the defense behind her.  The infield was anchored by Gianna Missiti at short who made play after play, Laney Mead at third, Caitlin Lembo at second, and Sydney Cox at first, all of which made multiple putouts.   Lulu Steele, Coco Steele and Alyx Rossi played their outfield hits well and kept their big hits to singles.

Championship Game Sunday July 31st vs. Tyngsboro Score Tyngsboro 4-0

A long day ended under the lights Sunday night with Tyngsboro on the winning end of a tough played 4-0 game.  Avenging their opening game loss to Bedford Tyngsboro came out with a pitcher Bedford had not faced and she was lights out with 15 strikeouts.

Bedford had some chances to get the offense going in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but a walk by Sydney Poor and singles by Kate Marino, Lulu Steele and Sydney Cox resulted in four runners left on base.  Pitcher Kaylee Grace turned up the heat in the late innings and walked away with a 10 strikeout game, with some defensive help from Gianna Missiti, Sydney Cox and catcher Sydney Poor who turned a 1-2-5 double play to end the third inning and fire up the Bedford squad, but it just wasn’t enough to get the bats going with some much needed offense.

Coming Up in August

The U10 girls have two more weeks left in their season with games at home Wednesday 8/3 (TONIGHT!) and next Wednesday, 8/10 at 6:15 on C and E field.

They also have away games at Burlington 8/4 and Lincoln-Sudbury 8/9.  The girls and coaches have had a memorable summer of softball and couldn’t be more proud of how these girls have come together as a team and stepped up their level of play.  Additional girls that have played with the team this summer but were unable to make the weekend’s tournament are Maya Billings, Anna McEachern, and Allison Miller
