Bedford’s American Legion Post 221 will hold its annual POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony from 3 to 4:30 pm on Sunday, September 25, at their headquarters,  357 The Great Road. Bedford Veterans and Scouts from Troop 194 will share the “POW/MIA Remembrance Ceremony that calls attention to Americans still unaccounted for from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and other conflicts.

The ceremony will take on a very special personal nature this year because Roger Rivet, one of Bedford’s most respected Veterans, “moved on to his ultimate permanent duty station,” in the words of Legion Commander Jon OC O’Connor, on September 17.

As a WWII Veteran, Rivet experienced trials and challenges “above and beyond” while earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart; he was also a POW and  actually knew what it was like to lose his freedom.

A lifelong Bedford resident, Rivet was ever present with his patriotic bearing and broad smile. “No Veterans Day or Memorial Day would pass without him and his beloved wife Irene proudly saluting our flag and parade members as they passed in formation,” said O’Connor, “and countless time they were active participants in the ceremonies.”

Everyone in Bedford is invited to join the American Legion family and the VFW in presenting the “Empty Chair Ceremony” to honor to those still listed as POW or MIA, and to bid farewell to Roger Rivet.
