Bedford Free Public Library – Short Takes

By Dot Bergin

At their January meeting, Bedford’s Library Trustees approved their FY18 budget proposal and hiring a new part-time professional librarian for the Children’s Room.

Library Director Richard Callaghan announced the hiring of Elaine Garnache as the new, part-time professional librarian in the Children’s Room.  Garnache, who will start her position on January 23, replaces Nancy Tegeler, who is now the head of the Children’s department in the Dover, MA library.  Garnache has worked in a number of libraries in the Minuteman Network, most recently in Lexington.

On the budget front, the Trustees approved a proposal of $1,209,768 at their January 10 meeting.  Callaghan explained that the Library is asking for $24,809 over the Finance Committee guideline to fund an additional 20 hours for the new professional librarian in the Children’s Room.  He explained that the demand for programming and patron assistance in the Children’s Room has grown so substantially in the last three years that staff can’t keep up with demand; the current part-time position needs to be increased to full-time.
