A Key to Good Health is in Your Lungs

Submitted by Bedford Youth and Family Services

One of the easiest healthy habits to promote good mental health is finding a few minutes throughout the day to take some deep breaths. You need no special space, no time away, or any equipment. Maybe it’s on your morning commute, during your lunch break, or even in the middle of a stressful meeting. Taking the time to breathe deeply benefits your mind and body, and is just one of the small steps you can take to promote good mental health.

If you’d rather take a break from your daily activities to do deep breathing exercises, there are several mobile apps you can get for your smartphone to walk you through the activity. Or, try a Google search to find the type of breathing exercise that is most effective for you. Some like guided visualization, while others prefer a form of progressive relaxation with their deep breathing exercises.

It can’t hurt to try some breathing exercises, but if you feel like your mental health needs more attention, you can take a free and anonymous mental health screening at www.bedfordma.gov/youth under the screenings section.
