If you enjoyed the musical artistry of Stephen Schwartz’s productions of Wicked, Pippin, or Godspell, you are going to love Children of Eden, the Bedford High School spring musical that opens Wednesday, March 15 and continues through Saturday, March 18.

Under the skillful artistic direction of Katrina Faulstich, musical director Evan Grunwald, choreographer Jessica Martin, and technical director Erik Smallenberger, an ensemble of 84 Bedford students, including 12 students from grades two to five, sing and dance their way through the telling of three age-old bible stories beginning with Genesis.

The play opens in darkness and emerges into light. The Father creates Adam and Eve who challenge his authority on several levels. In an effort to keep them busy and distracted from the tree of knowledge, Father encourages Adam and Eve to assist him in naming all the animals he has created.

Bedford’s Theatre Production students have created a host of unique and fanciful masks that bring the animals to life and will delight the audience.

Parents and teens alike will identify with the conflicts that naturally arise in Eden between the generations — “No, you cannot eat the apple. Please be home by curfew. You went where? I cannot believe you ventured out of the garden? Father, I just want to be my own person!” We learn that Adam and Eve eventually face their own set of challenges parenting their sons Cain and Abel.

Act Two is a fast forward of a thousand years and introduces us to the animals and storytellers who are making their way toward and onto the ark with Noah, a descendant of Adam, and his offspring. The constant rain of forty days and forty nights aboard the ark brings out both the best and worst characteristics of humans and animals. Will Father save the day? What will become of Noah’s three sons? Will love prevail? Will the rain stop, clouds clear, and make way for a beautiful sunrise and bright future for all? Don’t delay. Get your tickets and come to find out!

Children of Eden has a run time just shy of three hours and is appropriate for family audiences with fifth-grade students and older. Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, March 15 – a 4:30 pm matinee, and at 7 pm on Thursday, March 16, Friday, March 17, and Saturday, March 18.
