Election ~ 2017: Letter to the Editor, Sarita Pillai for Library Trustee

By Lalitha Gunturi Ranganath

I am supporting Sarita Pillai for Library Trustee in town elections on March 11.

Sarita and her family were one of the first families we befriended when we moved to Bedford three years ago.  She was instantly welcoming and helpful.and made Bedford feel more like home to us city transplants, new to suburban life.  We now share many common friends within the Indian community of Bedford and beyond.  Sarita and I also serve on a planning committee for a large Indian cultural event that is hosted annually in Bedford. From that work, I know Sarita to be very organized and efficient and is someone who can be relied on to volunteer to help and then excellently execute on whatever she takes on.

The library is a very valuable resource to our town and an important part of my family’s life.  As a working mother of two young boys, the library offers my family a place to foster a love for reading in my kids, an opportunity to meet with other young children, and a general sense of community.  I know Sarita would bring a valuable perspective to the role of Trustee; that of a busy parent of young children in a community that is becoming increasingly diverse. I am confident that if she were elected Trustee, Sarita would ably represent my wishes, thoughts, and concerns on how the library can continue to serve, and meet the needs of, families like mine and the community at large.

It is also clear that Sarita’s educational background and work in K-12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education) will allow her to expertly advise the library as it continues to integrate technology into its products and services and introduce STEM and arts programming for our children –  both of which are issues I consider to be important and necessary for the library to consider on an on-going basis.

Often times, especially in this new political climate we are living in, it is easy to feel that one person cannot make an impact.  Sarita has taught me that we can each do our part  – starting in the local community that we are proud to call home.  We must invest our time and energy in our community and the Bedford Free Library plays a crucial role in our Bedford community.

Sarita has my full and confident support.  I encourage Bedford voters to get to the polls on March 11 and vote Sarita Pillai for Library Trustee.  See you at the polls!
