By Linda Pollitz

Many residents consider Springs Brook Park to be one of Bedford’s hidden gems. Located at 167 Springs Road (adjacent to the Bedford VA Hospital), Springs Brook Park is a man-made swimming facility with a sandy beach, spray park, and beautiful forests surrounding the park. It includes picnic facilities, changing facilities, concessions, water slide, small basketball court, and new playground equipment for all members to enjoy.

Registration for swim lessons opens on April 24 at 9 pm. This year there will be 476 slots for swim lessons available, so members are encouraged to sign up as soon as registration opens. Please visit the Bedford Recreation Department website at https://www.bedfordma.gov/springs-brook-park to sign up for lessons. Additional information about the 2017 Springs Brook Park season is available in the Springs Brook park brochure here.

The Bedford Recreation Commission, which oversees the strategic vision for Bedford recreation activities including Springs Brook Park, met last week to discuss recent updates about the park. Amy Hamilton, Director of the Bedford Recreation Department, noted that this summer Springs Brook Park will be open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm, starting June 7 and running through August 18. There will be fewer swimming lesson options this summer than have been offered in past years, and anyone signing up for swimming or other lessons must be a member of Springs Brook Park.

Hamilton was pleased to report that this year there is a new management team in place at the park, with Matt Mulrooney as the new Director. A former swim teacher and coach, Mulrooney has solid experience running aquatics programs that include swimming instruction and swim teams. His Assistant Director, Braden Chagnon, similarly has years of experience as a lifeguard and swim instructor, and has led summer teen adventure programs. Both men are teachers during the school year, Mulrooney teaching Spanish and French at Chelmsford High School, and Chagnon teaching English and Social Studies at the Marshall Middle School in Billerica.

Summer job applications for a variety of summer positions at Springs Brook Park are being accepted. They include lifeguards, swim aides, concessions, equipment and admission attendants, as well as equipment managers. Bedford High School students are encouraged to apply.

Correction, April 24, 2017: Per Recreation Director Amy Hamilton not all lifeguards will have Water Safety Instructor Certification as was previously stated in the article.
