It came down to the final two matches for Bedford’s Girls Tennis team to defeat Weston 3-2.  The tension was palpable.

Weston’s Livvy Lathrop made quick work of Bedford’s Aneesha Manne 6-1, 6-0.  Bedford’s doubles team of Nghi Nguyen and Amelia Leida evened of the matches with a win over Grace Callahan and Lilly Loffi 6-2, 6-2.

Dread set in for BHS when Sarah Pequeno lost the first set 3-6, followed by the doubles team of Hannah Kilroy and Izzie Henderson dropping their first set 3-6.  The weather was cold and dreary, and so were the hopes of a Bedford win.

Sarah ended up losing to Weston’s Barbara Bebis 3-6, 3-6.

Bedford needed to pull out two wins in the final two matches for a team win.

Kilroy and Henderson rallied in the second set to beat Izzy Laufer and Fareen Kiani 7-5.  Meanwhile, BHS’s Mari Fay split the first two sets with Weston’s Michele Joseph 7-5, 6-7 (4-7)

As darkness was setting on Bedford’s chances,  the two team captains, Hannah Kilroy and Mari Fay, strapped on their “Buccaneer Pride Boots” and refused to be denied on home court.

The sun understood the gravity of the situation and popped out from behind the clouds, encouraging Hannah and Izzie to rally to a match victory 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3)

As 7 pm loomed on the horizon, Mari Fay finally beat Michelle Joseph 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

Bedford’s next match is Wednesday, May 10th at 4 PM on the home courts at BHS.

BHS Varsity Girls Tennis team could only stand and cheer as the final two matches went to three sets each.
