Just in time for Mother’s Day, Bedford Garden Club’s annual sale of geraniums, perennials, fresh- cut flower arrangements, hanging baskets, herbs and vegetables will be held this Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 pm, rain or shine, in front of the Bedford DPW Building, 314 The Great Road.
The sale is timed for Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on Sunday, May 14.
Hundreds of geraniums in the most popular colors (pink, hot pink, red, white and coral) will be sold, as will perennials donated from the yards of Garden Club members and other Bedford residents. Sale Coordinator Carol Amick thanked those residents who opened their gardens to the Club for this fundraiser, noting that “these non-Garden Club members’ plants will be just as beautiful as those coming from long-standing Garden Club members!”
The geraniums will be organized in rows by color; the perennials will be laid out in rows based on their requirements for light: “sun,” “shade,” or “part sun, part shade.” Garden Club members will help customers pick their plants, direct them through the cashier station, and assist them in loading their purchases into cars.
There also will be a “plant expert” area containing books describing more details of the perennials and answering other questions of the buyers.
Floral arrangements in two sizes (small and medium) will be on sale as well and are a big favorite as gifts for Mother’s Day because of their beauty, long-lasting quality and reasonable prices: $10 and $20.
In addition, the Club will sell hanging baskets of flowers, which are popular for front porches; lots of herbs and a number of vegetables, including kale, rhubarb, and lettuce.
Funds raised from this annual event are used by the Bedford Garden Club for two scholarships given each year to graduating high school students and Bedford residents already in college. Proceeds also help to fund other civic projects of the Club, including the purchase and donation of Arbor Day trees to every Bedford Schools first grader and programs and guest speakers on interesting gardening topics, all of which are open to the public. Other Garden Club civic activities include planting, weeding and watering flowers on many of Bedford’s islands and corners, at the Bedford Public Library and other Town buildings, and maintaining the historic Job Lane Farm Museum herb garden.
The Garden Club’s Fundraising Committee, which began last January to plan for this annual event, includes Claire Austin-White, Jan Burnes, Bobbie Ennis, Christine McGovern, Maureen Levine, Zoe Pierce and Chair Carol Amick.
