Bedford is a Housing Hero

By Debra Parkhurst

Bedford is a “Housing Hero” according to the Massachusetts Housing Partnership (MHP.)

While reviewing the Regional Housing Services agreement with Director Elizabeth Rust at their meeting on May 30, the Selectmen learned the town of Bedford is the recipient of the most recent “Housing Hero” Award. Also noteworthy was the 13A Preservation Project for 96 units at Bedford Village and the successful RFP for the proposed housing on Pine Hill Road (Coast Guard site). Bedford currently has over 18 percent affordable housing.

In her update to the Selectmen, Rust, Director of the Regional Housing Services Office (RHSO), reviewed FY 17 accomplishments and presented FY18 plans and budget. RHSO provides support for housing agencies in the towns of Acton, Bedford, Burlington, Concord, Lexington, Sudbury, and Weston. Staff at the agency provides assistance for housing residents and housing seekers, while also maintaining and assisting owners and residents with State mandated compliance. The office is currently located in Concord.

The Selectmen praised the work of RHSO as an example of regional shared services that work, and an excellent value for the town. They voted to approve the three year Agreement to continue to share the services and costs of the Regional Housing Services Office until June 30, 2020.
