Submitted by the BHS AP Spanish Class

We are students in Bedford High’s AP Spanish class. This year, we participated in a service learning program called AP with WE where we each created our own local and global projects. We are hosting a yard sale this weekend in order to contribute to each of our projects and help us give back to the local and/or global communities we chose to focus on.

In order to help raise money for the organizations listed below, we are holding a MULTI-FAMILY YARD SALE from 10 am to 3 pm on SUNDAY JUNE 11 at 8 NICKERSON ROAD, BEDFORD.

We would greatly appreciate if you could stop by and support our cause. We will also have boxes out for our food and book drive. Please feel free to bring any canned or boxed food and/or any old books you are looking to donate. Hope to see you Sunday!

Group 1: Boston Public Schools & Save the Children

It is commonly believed that education plays an essential role in a child’s development. It is also commonly believed that the right to education is a basic human right and that all children should be able to attend school. However this is not the case for some students, in the US and around the world. We do not believe that this is fair and why we have decided to fight back.

We have decided to try to combat this problem by hosting a book drive. We will be sending the books to Boston Public Elementary Schools. To combat this problem globally we are raising money for Save The Children, supports universal education among other things. We chose to send the money to Guatemala.

We are focusing on a similar problem as Group 1. Like they said, many children are unable to receive a proper education. Even if they are able to attend school, they may not be nourished enough to perform their best.

For this reason, we are hosting a food drive to combat malnutrition in Bedford through the Bedford Food Pantry. Save The Children also supports universal nutrition so through various fundraisers we are working to raise money for this organization as well.

Group 3: Planned Parenthood Federation

The reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule has caused many problems for women in developing countries, and the International Planned Parenthood Federation will lose 100 million dollars in funding. The website states that “access to critical, affordable, high quality, integrated reproductive healthcare services like contraception, Zika information, maternal health, ante-natal care, reproductive cancers, and HIV prevention and treatment will be denied around the world.”

Therefore, we decided to raise money for this organization to combat this issue and help to ensure that women all around the world can receive proper healthcare and be educated about their reproductive health.
