Bedford Cyclists Are Gearing Up for the 37th Pan Mass Challenge on August 5-6

Several of Bedford’s Pan Mass Challenge cyclists took to the road on Wednesday afternoon, July 26 for a group training ride in advance of the 2017 PMC ride on August 5 and 6.

According to veteran PMC rider Amy Mason, Bedford cyclists have competed in the Pan Mass Challenge since its inception in 1980, and this year a dozen Bedford riders are registered, with more than 109 rides in their collective history.

Notable among the hurdles they’ve conquered are intense heat and drenching rains; Gephyrophobia; and their own bouts with various cancers. Each of them rides for friends or family members who have fought cancer.

Among this year’s Bedford teams, Mason and her crew are riding for their Pedal Partner Kyle who is currently fighting lymphoblastic leukemia in the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The Mason family team has raised more than $500,000 over their PMC career.

Riding from Hillsdale, NY to Provincetown

Riding from Sturbridge to Provincetown

  • Dan Hurwitz, DH0128, has been riding for 12 years, since 2006
  • John Martin, JM0600, has been riding for 8 years, since 2010
  • Rodney Green, RG0158, has been riding for 8 years, since 2010 – Green is a Living Proof rider
  • Georgia Cook, GC0117, a volunteer since 2004, this is Georgia’s first ride!

Riding from Wellesley to Provincetown

  • Bruce Murphy, RM0122, has been riding for 16 years, since 2002
  • Martin Rogers, MR0111, has been riding for 15 years, since 2003
  • Amy Mason, AM0085, has been riding for 14 years, since 2004
  • Frank Richichi, FR0010, has been riding for 13 years, since 2005
  • Jack Markuse, JM0739, has been riding for 5 years, since 2013
  • Bill Keating, BK0131, returning after missing a year — Keating is a Living Proof rider

There is also a Virtual Rider from Bedford

  • David Sachs, DS0382, has been riding 3 years, since 2015 – with Stage 4 lung cancer, David will make a virtual ride this year
