Junior Summer Stock Theater Campers Rehearsing Madagascar Jr. ~ a Musical Adventure

By Linda White

Continuing a much loved Bedford summer tradition, the curtain will rise on Wednesday, August 9 and Thursday, August 10 for performances of Madagascar Jr. A Musical Adventure, based on the popular DreamWorks animated movie.

Presented by the campers of Bedford’s Junior Summer Stock Theater, the play is appropriate for all ages. The story follows the antics of Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, Gloria the Hip Hop Hippo, and a group of scheming penguins who escape from their home in the New York Central Park Zoo and end up in King Julien’s Madagascar.

An energetic cast of 42 campers entering Grades 4-9 will act, sing, dance and participate in designing and crafting scenery, props, and costumes under the experienced direction of JGMS music teacher Amy Budka. This is Budka’s 27th year directing Bedford Junior Summer Stock, a four-week musical theater production experience. Assisting Budka with all aspects of the production are Deanna Lobo, Melanie Cordero, Jess Martin, Marko Deperalta, Seda Korroch, Kate Winkler, Maddy Siegal, and Isabelle Gitlin.

Budka explained, “Auditions were held in early June at JGMS and Lane School. There were so many talented students, we decided to double-cast the show and schedule four performances allowing an opportunity to showcase as many campers as possible. Madagascar Jr. was selected because it is a fairly new selection in the junior repertoire, it is a fun show with appeal to all ages, and includes good roles for many actors. I guarantee you will leave humming I Like to Move It, Move It. Please come and enjoy the show!”

Four performances are scheduled in the air conditioned JGMS auditorium.

Two performances on Wednesday, August 9 are scheduled at10:30 am and 6 pm. Performances on Thursday, August 10 are scheduled at 1 pm and 6 pm.  Admission is free. Donations will be gratefully and graciously accepted.
