The House and Senate Chairs of the legislative committee responsible for energy and utilities policy have scheduled a public hearing in response to the state Department of Public Utilities’ approval of a request from Eversource Energy for a new fee on solar users.

House Chair Thomas A. Golden, Jr. (D-Lowell) and Senate Chair Mike Barrett (D-Lexington) will conduct a formal oversight hearing of the committee this coming Tuesday, January 30, at 1 pm in Room B-1 of the State House.

In a statement, the two chairs said, “Last session, the legislature decided that solar net metering customers should pay their fair share to maintain the electric grid’s poles and wires. But no one expected the utilities and DPU to take this minimum bill to such unprecedented lengths.  There are mainstream alternatives.  We want to know why the parties put these aside.”

The oversight hearing is open to the public but testimony is by invitation only. Expected to testify are representatives from the Baker Administration and the Office of the Attorney General, Eversource, the solar industry, and other interested parties.
