Facebook was abuzz early Monday with questions about a pair of extremely loud aircraft taking off over Bedford, one shortly after 7 am, when the nighttime noise abatement rules expire each morning, and a second around 7:20.

The comments were split among curiosity, concern, and the acknowledgment that heavy military air transport and fighter planes often visit Hanscom Air Force Base.

While at least one person apparently slept through the noise, others reported significant window rattling near Route 3, near Fawn Lake, as well as in West Bedford.

A call to Amber Goodspeed, Massport’s Manager of Airport Administration at Hanscom Field, resulted in an email from Massport Media Relations Manager Kelly Smith who reported that this morning’s takeoffs were a pair of F-18 fighters based at Oceana Naval Base in Virginia Beach, VA.

Capable of “vertical” take-offs from aircraft carriers, the F-18 can be almighty loud!

I grew up with Hanscom Air Base being here and I do not mind the sound of Freedom.
