Richard Callaghan, Director of the Bedford Free Public Library, released a statement about library safety after the past weekend’s fatal incident at the Winchester Library

“This past Saturday at the Winchester Public Library, a 22-year-old woman was fatally stabbed by another patron in an unprovoked attack. The Winchester Public Library is part of our network, and we have sent our condolences to Ann Wirtanen, Winchester’s library director. We are committed to supporting our neighbors in Winchester and the Minuteman Library Network during this difficult time.

“As always, the safety of library patrons and the staff is our top priority, and we will continue to work with the Bedford Police Department and the library staff on regular safety training.  We are grateful to Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno, who has directed his officers to increase their foot patrols in the library to reassure both patrons and staff. “
